While winemakers have been blending different types of red grapes together for centuries, many wine experts agree that the “Red Blend Craze” began here in States in the early 2000s, shortly after the debut of “the Prisoner”—a Napa Valley red from renowned winemaker Dave Phinney. While Phinney’s blend was created more by accident, including a delicious mix of Cabernet, Charbono, Syrah and Zinfandel grapes—some of the more popular red blends today are Malbec-based blends from Argentina, Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon blends from Australia and what are known as “Super Tuscans” or “Tuscan Blends” which are blends of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and others. In addition to these countries, delicious red wine blends can be found from Portugal, Greece, South Africa and even right here in America.
